Soak the lentils in enough water overnight or for 4 to 5 hours.

Drain and pressure cook the lentils with 2 cups of water and 1/2 tsp salt for 4 whistles or till the lentils are cooked.

Once the pressure cools down mash the lentils and keep aside.

Heat ghee in a pan, add ginger, garlic and chilli and saute till raw aroma goes away.

Add the onions and saute till it turns soft and translucent.

Add the tomatoes and saute till the oil starts to leave the sides of the mixture.

Add salt, chili powder, turmeric and garam masala and saute for a min.

Add 1/4 cup water and let the spices cook.

Add the lentils to the pan and mix, simmer for 4 to 5 mins till the dal thickens.

While simmering if the dal looks thicker than you can stir in some water and continue to simmer.

Garnish with coriander and serve hot.
