Chana dal is a nutritious healthy breakfast for all those who love South Indian breakfast but don’t want to consume extra calories. This idli recipe is made of chana dal and brown rice batter and makes for a super nutritious breakfast. If you are bored of the regular idli recipe then this recipe is a must try and we bet you will not regret trying them. Chana dal is high in protein which is essential for muscle development and brown rice is high in fibre which keeps you satiated for long. You can also add veggies of your choice to add to the nutrition quotient of the recipe. Serve it with coconut chutney and hot sambhar and we bet you will have a super energetic day ahead.

Chana Dal Idli

Ingredients

  • 150 gm Chana dal Bengal gram lentils
  • 100 gm brown rice
  • 2 tbsp chilli-ginger paste
  • 2 Dried Red chilli
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 2 sprigs Curry leaves
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp fruit salt
  • 1 tsp ghee
  • 1/2 tsp oil for greasing

Instructions

  1. Wash and soak the dal and rice separately in water for 3-4 hours.
  2. Grind them with 1/2 cup water and mix to form a smooth batter.
  3. Cover the bowl and let it ferment for 7-8 hrs.
  4. Add salt, turmeric, chilli-ginger paste and mix gently.
  5. Grease the idli pan with oil and pour the batter in the pan.
  6. Steam them for 10-12 minutes and allow to cool for 5 minutes before demolding.
  7. Cut the idlis in 1" cubes and keep aside.
  8. Heat ghee in a pan and add curry leaves, mustard seeds and red chillies.
  9. When it starts to splutter add the idli cubes and mix well.
  10. Serve hot with sambhar and chutney.
