Dal is one of the most common recipes made in every Indian household. JOOS Food brings to you a unique dal recipe which has the goodness of chana dal and urad dal and can be made when you are bored of eating your regular dal. Amritsari dal is made of two dals namely Bengal dal (chana dal) and black gram (urad dal). Both the dals are boiled and cooked in flavorful Indian spices. This mouthwatering dal recipe is also known as Punjabi dal or langarwali dal. Serve it with brown rice and we are sure you will be tempted for a second serving. Urad dal: This dal is one of the richest sources of proteins and Vitamin B. Chana dal: Chana dal or Bengal gram dal is one of the richest vegan sources of dietary proteins. It is also rich in trace minerals like copper, manganese etc. Having this dal helps keep diabetes at bay.

Amritsari Dal

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup whole black gram sabut urad dal
  • 2 tbsp split bengal gram chana dal
  • 1 green chilli chopped
  • 1/2 cup onion chopped
  • 1/2 cup tomato chopped
  • 1 tablespoon chopped ginger garlic
  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 2 tbsp ghee
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala powder
  • 2 tbsp coriander chopped
  • 1 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Soak the lentils in enough water overnight or for 4 to 5 hours.
  2. Drain and pressure cook the lentils with 2 cups of water and 1/2 tsp salt for 4 whistles or till the lentils are cooked.
  3. Once the pressure cools down mash the lentils and keep aside.
  4. Heat ghee in a pan, add ginger, garlic and chilli and saute till raw aroma goes away.
  5. Add the onions and saute till it turns soft and translucent.
  6. Add the tomatoes and saute till the oil starts to leave the sides of the mixture.
  7. Add salt, chili powder, turmeric and garam masala and saute for a min.
  8. Add 1/4 cup water and let the spices cook.
  9. Add the lentils to the pan and mix, simmer for 4 to 5 mins till the dal thickens.
  10. While simmering if the dal looks thicker than you can stir in some water and continue to simmer.
  11. Garnish with coriander and serve hot.
